Paediatric oral medicine and pathology

The program focuses on the processes in diagnosis and treatment planning and then management of oral lesions in children. Although much oral pathology in children is benign, it is essential to eliminate more serious illnesses. The presentation of pathology in children often differs from that seen in adults and the subtleties of these differences are often important in diagnosis. Additionally, many lesions change in form or extent with growth of the body. While some disorders are confined to the mouth, oral lesions may often be a sign of a systemic medical disorder. The same disease may present in a multitude of ways but equally, one presentation may be representative of many different disorders.  These presentations and quizzes will focus on an approach to the diagnosis and management of common, and some uncommon soft tissue lesions in children and dental anomalies. As a diagnostic aid, conditions have been grouped according to presentation of colour.  The areas covered will include: orofacial infections, oral ulceration, epulides, neoplasm’s in children, periodontal disease and the premature loss of primary teeth, gingival enlargements, vascular lesions, pathology in the newborn, disorders of tooth number, shape and quality.
